What You Search For Reveals Your Priorities

What You Search for Reveals Your Priorities

How many times per day do you go online and search for something? Most of our answers to people these days include “Google it” or “look it up online.” There’s a lot we can learn about ourselves and about our culture by what we are searching for and at the end of the day, those search results reveal our priorities.

You Search For What Interests You

Everyone has various interests and passions and God has wired all of us differently. More than likely, the things we are spending most of our time on and interests we want to fulfill, we are searching for it. We want to learn everything and anything about it and see what other people do with it or how it impacts their lives.

Does Jesus interest you? Is there a passion in you to follow Christ? What about to make disciples?

Sometimes we talk about how hard it is to follow Jesus and that we feel that our relationship is “dry,” but are we even taking an interest in Him?

We can follow a sports team all season long, memorizing statistics and knowing exactly where they stand on any given day because we have taken an interest in them. We won’t be “dry” with our sports team because we are involved each day searching about them, learning about them, and watching them each day.

I’d encourage you to search about Jesus, learn more about Jesus, take an interest in the one who saved you and has forgiven you for all eternity, and watch Jesus and how He lived in the Bible.

You Search For The Questions You Have

We all have questions. No one has figured everything out and anyone who tells you that is fooling themselves. Therefore, what happens is that we find ourselves searching the internet for the answers. Don’t get me wrong, this is a great tool for us to get answers and fairly quickly, but that doesn’t necessarily mean they are the correct answers.

On top of that, the questions you are asking online reveal what is important to you and what you want answers about. For example, someone might be searching “why is life so difficult,” while the other person is searching “how do I talk to God.” These people are going through different stuff based on their questions, but nevertheless…are seeking answers.

Does the internet have answers? Yes. Are they always accurate? Absolutely not.

The Bible is the only true source we have that is 100% truth. It’s perfect. It’s God’s Word. It has all the answers for what you’re ultimately looking for in life and sometimes you may not even know that yet. I’d encourage you to read the Bible. If you haven’t read it in awhile, open it up, start with a book like John in the New Testament, and I think you’d be surprised for what could take place in your life and the answers you could find to your questions.

You Search For Things No One Else Can See

This is by far the hardest part for all of us. Yes we search for what interests us and we search the answers to the questions we have, but we also search in other ways if we are really honest with ourselves…we search for those things that no one else will ever see.

  • We search for porn and other sexual types of fulfillment.
  • We search for ways to cheat on our spouse.
  • We search for ways to cheat with our finances.
  • We search for ways to commit suicide.
  • We search for things as we are angry or feel guilty.
  • We search for the questions we are too afraid to ask others about.

Whatever we search for online in secret, reveals where our real priorities are in life.

We show our real identity when we search for things online that no one else can ever see. It might be difficult to think about, but I’d encourage you to take some time and think about the things you search for online, especially when no one else can see you.

As believers, we’ll know pretty quickly if our priorities are lined up to follow Jesus based on what we’re searching for. Are you striving to live a holy life, pleasing and acceptable to God? Not for perfection, but for obedience and out of joy from remembering the cross and what Jesus has done? Be encouraged that you are already forgiven for all eternity, so confess before The Lord and others where your priorities have been and make a change.

For non believers, I just want to personally tell you that satisfaction and answers in life CAN be found in Jesus. I promise. It doesn’t take long to see that people all around the world are searching for hope, searching for their purpose in life, and feel worthless all at the same time.

Hope can be found in Jesus and what He has done for you. You do have a purpose in life and God can reveal to you what that purpose is if you come to Him. Lastly, you are NOT worthless…you’ve been made in the image of God from the very beginning and Jesus didn’t come and die on the cross for worthless people. As He paid the penalty for all our sins and rose again defeating death and sin in victory, He proved a major point…God wouldn’t send His Son Jesus to do all of that if He didn’t greatly care for you and me.
