Happy Valentine’s Day!
I fully believe that every person today desires to feel and know true love. I really believe that in the depths of every person, whether admitted or not, there is a desire to experience the affection of another, to know that you are the one who catches another’s eye. Yes, it’s Valentine’s Day, so perhaps the emotion and publicity of this love is heightened.
But I believe that this desire to be loved goes well beyond a man-made holiday. *Men, you better still step up and utilize this day to express your love. Don’t be lazy!* I believe that the desire to feel and know true love is hard wired into the very fabric of who we are as humans. God has created each person with an innate desire to love and be loved. It goes back to the very beginning of creation.
In the very beginning of the world, after God had created Adam, he looked upon His entire good creation and now said, “It is not good that the man should be alone;” (Genesis 2:18). Up to this point, everything that God had created was declared to be good, to be perfect. But now with Adam in the mix, something was not good. And the one thing that was not good was that Adam was alone.
You see the problem with Adam being alone was that there was no other person in which he could give and receive love; thus he could not reflect the Triune God who perfectly gives and receives love between Father, Son, Spirit, the very reason we are created… to reflect God with our lives. Without the ability to love others, we would instantly fail in why we were created.
So God did something to fix this. He created “a helper fit for him” (Genesis 2:18). God created Eve, another person whom he could love and receive love.
That desire you have on this Valentine’s Day, and every day for that matter, to feel and know true love… that desire is good. You were made with that desire. But as I’m sure everyone of you have experienced, that love will fail you. If not today, maybe tomorrow. And if not tomorrow, maybe… well you get the picture. The love between one another can never be perfect while on earth. Because none of us are perfect (sin).
There is good news though, on this Valentine’s Day. There is a perfect love that you can receive today. There is an affectionate love for you that is real, and true and is set on you.
“For God so loved the world [you and me!] that He gave His only Son, that whoever believes in Him [Jesus], will not perish but have eternal life” John 3:16
The perfectly true love of God is for you and me. Not because we’ve earned it, or deserved His affection. Quite the opposite actually; we don’t deserve His love. But true love is unconditional. He loves us without condition. On this Valentine’s Day, we have the opportunity to receive the perfect love of God for us.
Will you receive His love? Will you believe that Jesus came to bring that love to you? If so, then listen to the promise of that love for you:
“For I am sure that neither death nor life, nor angels nor rulers, nor things present nor things to come, nor powers, nor height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God in Christ Jesus our Lord.” Romans 8:38-39
Now, go and give that love to another today. This can be an amazing Valentine’s Day – receiving and giving the true love of Jesus.
