It’s that time of year again. Candy, pumpkins and costumes fill the stores. As a kid, I loved this time of year. My birthday falls 5 days before Halloween so for awhile that meant a lot of celebrating and costume parties. It was great to dress up and to see friends dressed up and ready to score some candy.
Many years older, I think of how innocent that was to masquerade as a superhero, a Jedi knight or whatever else caught the eye and my mom’s budget. Many years later, it’s still fun to dress up on Halloween with the family and score a few laughs (I don’t find the candy as magical these days) as well as enjoy what friends have come up with.
But, in day-to-day life, I don’t find much use for trying to be somebody I’m not.
As a Christian gifted with salvation, the truth and the Holy Spirit, it’s tempting to want to be everything and everyone to people. Sometimes we want to share what we know to see others helped and healed. Sometimes, for less altruistic reasons, we want to appear like we have it all together to mask our own need for help and healing.
However, there is no need for a costume before God. The Bible is clear on who we should be in relation to the identity we have in Jesus Christ.
We Are New Creations
Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation. The old has passed away; behold, the new has come.
We Are Sons and Daughters of God
“For in Christ Jesus you are all sons of God, through faith.” – Galatians 3:26
We Are The Body of Christ
“Now you are the body of Christ and individually members of it.” – 1 Corinthians 12:27
We Are Friends of God
“No longer do I call you servants, for the servant does not know what his master is doing; but I have called you friends, for all that I have heard from my Father I have made known to you.” – John 15:15
