It’s the most wonderful time of the year.
Well, it should be. Our mighty God’s plan to enter our context and subsequently bring about salvation through the life, death and resurrection of Jesus Christ is certainly worth celebrating.
But do you see what I see? It appears the gift we should celebrate most is easily lost in the shuffle of a busy month.
An alien visiting our current culture might find we have a tendency to:
- Mark the evening or early morning after a day of giving thanks for what we have by rushing to find something new.
- Look the other way on debt as long as it means gifts under a Christmas tree.
- Get irritated by crowds in the stores, on the roads and in our homes.
- Throw Christmas cheer out the car window with one honk from an impatient driver.
- Illuminate our homes but not our hearts and minds.
To fully enjoy Christmas and what it means, I believe we need to constantly remind ourselves of the gift we have in God’s salvation and resolve to find our treasure in Him alone.
“Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of lights with whom there is no variation or shadow due to change.” – James 1:17
“For by grace you have been saved through faith. And this is not your own doing; it is the gift of God.” – Ephesians 2:8
“For the wages of sin is death, but the free gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.” – Romans 6:23
“Having gifts that differ according to the grace given to us, let us use them: if prophecy, in proportion to our faith.” – Romans 12:6
“I have been crucified with Christ. It is no longer I who live, but Christ who lives in me. And the life I now live in the flesh I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave himself for me.” – Galatians 2:20
“For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life.” – John 3:16
Unlike the gift you may get this year that you may not remember next year, God’s gift makes it the most wonderful time for an eternity.
