Prone To Wander, Here’s My Heart

Prone to Wander, Here's My Heart

I wasn’t really part of the Church growing up and started following Jesus later on in my life after I was already in my 20’s. That means I missed a lot of Church history including things like older hymns that the Church used to sing and worship to. Whenever I would hear one when I first became a believer, I almost immediately thought “that sounds too old…not interested,” but now I find great encouragement in them.

“Prone to wander, Lord I feel it, Prone to leave the God I love, Here’s my heart. O take and seal it; Seal it for thy courts above.”

Come Thou Fount was written back in 1757 by Robert Robinson. It’s amazing to think that a song written that long ago still has impact on us today. When I started paying attention to the lyrics, I was blown away from what I read because it describes what I experience in my own walk with The Lord today.

Prone To Wander

How many times have you been prone to wander as you follow Christ in your life? Ever feel like you are alone in this? Does it encourage you to think that in 1757 and even today, people still have this struggle as Christians?

We all feel the tension to forget our first love, who is Christ, because we are still sinful in need of a Savior. Maybe we aren’t spending enough time with God or praying to Him or reading the Bible, but regardless of our situation, we find ourselves wandering because of sin. The reminder that we still need Jesus just the same as we did in the beginning when we were rescued should remind us of how great of a Savior we have. You are still forgiven today, and will be tomorrow, if you follow Jesus.

Here’s My Heart

Ultimately we come back to a place of giving Jesus our hearts. We come to a place of dependence (even if it’s our 50th time to do so) and surrender everything again…and again. We remind ourselves of the Gospel each and everyday, and then respond with joyful obedience because Jesus has already done everything for us. Jesus only had to rescue us one time, and it’s a lifetime of following Him and committing our lives to Him.

Have you given your heart to Christ?

Trust God today. If you follow Jesus, trust that you are forgiven for all eternity and be moved to action to serve Him from this point forward. If you don’t follow Jesus, consider who Jesus really is. Consider what the Gospel is all about.

Be encouraged today that the Church is in all of this together. We can learn from each other, love each other, and help spur one another on to love and good works as we seek to glorify God in all that we do by sharing the love of Christ.

Question: What comes to mind for you when you hear “Prone to wander, Lord I feel it, Prone to leave the God I love, Here’s my heart. O take and seal it; Seal it for thy courts above?”
