Only Child Syndrome

Only Child Syndrome

I was raised an only child. My wife points this out when food disappears and when I get tired of being around a lot of people. I can be selfish too, but that’s another post.

Not knowing what God has planned for our family going forward, I wonder if my 3-year old daughter will get to experience being the only child. There are definite benefits. The competition is nil. Growing up, the stage was mine, the toys were mine, the clothes were mine . . . well, at least at home.

Because we live in a world where we go outside and mix with other people, there can be some challenges for an only child.

Sharing isn’t always easy.

It’s something we work on now in the hope it will be easier for her later.

It’s still something I am working on.

I can’t do it without God.

I’m reminded our God is unlimited. Millions call him Father and are still loved like only children.

He loves us personally. His love helps us to love others. We are on his stage.

We are without excuse for selfishness. Again, that’s another post.

From a deep trust in His love, we can embrace sharing our time, talent and treasure with others.

So whether you are an only child or one of many or few, we can all mix it up together knowing we are first loved by God in a very personal and unique way.

“See what kind of love the Father has given to us, that we should be called children of God; and so we are. The reason why the world does not know us is that it did not know him.” – 1 John 3:1

“Humble yourselves, therefore, under the mighty hand of God so that at the proper time he may exalt you, casting all your anxieties on him, because he cares for you.” – 1 Peter 5:6-7

“Thank you for making me so wonderfully complex! Your workmanship is marvelous—how well I know it.” – Psalm 139:14

Let’s hear from the only children out there. What are the challenges? What are the benefits?

I welcome your comments (at least for awhile until I want to be left alone).
