Proverbs 16: The Lord Establishes You

the Lord Establishes You

I’ve realized over time that anxiety is something that I’ve seen more and more people deal with lately. It could be the future state of our country, various family situations, job transitions, etc. but regardless of whatever it is, many of us…especially as believers…are anxious.

The book of Proverbs has wisdom throughout everything and in regards to chapter 16, the main points seem to be how God is in complete control and the sooner we trust Him in that, daily, the sooner we’ll find wisdom in how to handle our day to day situations.

Your Plans And Steps Will Be Established

“Commit your work to the Lord, and your plans will be established.” – Proverbs 16:3

“The heart of man plans his way, but the Lord establishes his steps.” – Proverbs 16:9

We have to be careful because we, as sinners, are prone to believe our way is right, pure (Proverbs 16:2) and we’ll plan our way (Proverbs 16:9). The problem is we think we could do all of this without God so we believe we are in “control”, when in reality, The Lord is really the one who establishes our steps. That is bad for us if we are wanting to be the main character in our lives, however, that is good for us if we are wanting God to be at the center of our lives.

The more we remind ourselves that God establishes our steps and plans, the more we can confidently follow Jesus and trust as we take steps day by day, that He’ll direct us.

Real Wisdom Brings Health To The Heart

“Good sense is a fountain of life to him who has it, but the instruction of fools is folly.” – Proverbs 16:22

“There is a way that seems right to a man, but its end is the way to death.” – Proverbs 16:25

The rest of this chapter focuses on the benefits of wisdom and why we need to trust in God’s plans for our lives and take things one step at a time.

We can see pretty easily by reading the rest of chapter 16 that we will default to sinful thinking and sinful planning every time. The hard part about this is that we really will convince ourselves that we have the right “plans” when in reality, we are way off. The only way we can tell the difference at all is through our time with The Lord. The more we read the Bible, pray, and seek Jesus throughout the day, the more God will reveal to us whether our plans are foolish, or Godly.

At the end of the day, God is the creator of the heavens and the earth and He created you and me. We have a tendency to “look down” at ourselves and make this life about us and our plans. Let me encourage you (and myself) to consistently look up, look at God, take steps forward one day at a time, and trust that He will establish you.

Take steps forward each day and trust that God will establish you. (Proverbs 16)
