When the Bible talks about marriage, it speaks to the fact that it isn’t just an arrangement or an agreement between two people. God joins a man and a woman together and takes them from being single (they are no longer two) to being married (one flesh). Immediately after that, they are unified together in many mysterious ways that no other human relationship can copy and are given all of the rights and responsibilities from God that they didn’t have before.
“So they are no longer two but one flesh. What therefore God has joined together, let not man separate.” – Matthew 19:6
Marriage Is One Flesh
Being one flesh does include sex between the husband and wife (Genesis 2:24), but isn’t only limited to that. It also means they have left their parents’ household and have started on a brand new foundation with a brand new family. Their new primary loyalty is to each other before anyone else. They are absolutely one in everything they do.
Let No One Separate
I don’t think the Bible just makes this statement for fun. I believe it’s a warning for all of us to take seriously. There are going to be times that separation will try to creep into marriages. It may come in the form of pornography, an affair, family, friends, sickness, or even children. We must be on guard at all times to protect our marriages and to keep our spouse the number one priority outside of our relationship with Christ because chances are, we will find our marriages being attacked almost daily.
Be On Guard And Protect Your Marriage
I’ve personally found that there are many ways to go about doing this. Asking questions within our marriage each week is huge for us. For others, it may need to be something like a date night each week. Whatever it is for you, here are some things to consider when it comes to guarding and protecting your marriage:
- Let The Bible Be The Authority In Your Marriage
- Spend Time With God Individually And Together Consistently
- Consider Your Spouse Above All Else Each Day
- Be Appropriate With Members Of The Opposite Sex
- Go To Bed Together Each Night
- Always Work On Your Communication
- Continue To Date And Pursue One Another
Our culture is not a big fan of marriage. It makes fun of it, says it’s too hard to do it, encourages you to give up, or just refers to it as something from the past. I’d say that marriage is amazing and absolutely well worth it in every way. We shouldn’t be surprised when our culture doesn’t agree with what the Bible has to say. Here’s just a snapshot if you Google “Marriage is…” on the top results that pop up.
At the end of the day, God shows His grace and mercy to us in providing such a beautiful gift as marriage. Not only that, He provides us with the blueprint (the Bible) on how everything works, so we should follow it. It’s a picture of Christ (the husband) loving and sacrificing for His Church (the bride) and we should see it as an honor and an opportunity to make much of Him every step of the way.
